GASP Submits Comments on U.S. Steel’s Proposed Hot Strip Mill - Here’s What YOU Need to Know to Speak Out
The Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) this week submitted formal comments on the operating permit for U.S. Steel’s Hot Strip Mill project at its Edgar Thomson Works - noting two ways the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) can make it more protective of public health.
Our senior attorney John Baillie reviewed the permit and flagged these main issues:
The permit does not include sufficient monitoring, recordkeeping and reporting requirements to assure compliance.
The permit does not limit hourly steel throughput to assure compliance.
You can read our full comments on the proposed permit here. And we really hope you not only read them, but consider submitting your own.
Why? Because regulators like ACHD need not only technical comments like the ones GASP submitted, but also input from residents about how the permit can be stronger AND how a more protective permit can help YOU live a healthier life.
Need some background info on the proposed project? We got you. Need a little help getting your public comments started? Check out the GASP Guide to Crafting Effective Public Comments.
Finally: Need the deets on how and when to comment on the permit? We got you for that, too.
