Allegheny Co. Council Continues to Play Political Games with Public Health, Proposed Permit Fee Schedule Changes Still Unaddressed

Updated: Apr 17

Bad news, friends: Allegheny County Council continues to demonstrate a shocking disregard for the health and well-being of our community in its inaction on a health department proposal to increase certain permit fees on industrial polluters as required by federal law.

Despite an outpouring of public comment at its last meeting - where GASP, fellow environmental advocates and residents implored members to take action - the matter is not included on Allegheny County Council’s April 22 meeting agenda.

Here is what Patrick told the board:

Sources tell GASP that council is poised to take the issue back up in late May, conveniently following the primary election.

To be clear: There should be no room for political games when it comes to our public health. This continued stonewalling of residents is a really bad look for Allegheny County Council - a look their constituents will be sure to remember.

GASP will be present at the April 22 meeting to demand that this crucial issue be placed on the agenda for discussion and action at the very next opportunity. We urge you to join us. Your presence sends a powerful message that the community will not tolerate further delays.

And there are many ways to take action:

  • Attend the Allegheny County Council meeting: Join us at 5:30 p.m. on April 22 to make your voice heard if you are able. We completely understand it’s challenging to get downtown for those meetings and that it’s expensive to park.

  • Contact your County Council representative: Call or email them and demand they prioritize this issue. Tell them to stop hiding behind procedure and insist on a vote at the next possible meeting. You can find your representative's contact information here.

  • Spread the word: Share this blog post and encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to take action.

The health of our community is not a political football. We deserve accountability and immediate action. Together, we can ensure that our elected officials prioritize clean air and responsible governance.

As always, stay tuned. We will keep you posted.
