Ten years ago, community members and partners like us helped vision and support the launch of SmellPGH, the crowdsourced smell-reporting tool developed by Carnegie Mellon University's CREATE Lab. A decade later, it's still helping Pittsburghers document the air pollution they experience every day, from sources like Clairton Coke Works and Edgar Thomson Works, some of the region's biggest emitters of Hydrogen Sulfide.

This milestone comes at a moment when local air quality is back in the spotlight. This summer's hazardous wildfire smoke days were a stark reminder that Allegheny County has consistently ranked among the worst counties in the nation for particle pollution, and asthma rates here remain significantly higher than the national average, especially in Mon Valley communities near major industrial sources.

For 10 years, SmellPGH has given residents a way to turn their lived experience into a public record, one that's informed county policy like the 2021 Mon Valley Air Pollution Episode Rule and fueled research into where this pollution comes from. We're celebrating this milestone with CREATE Lab on September 30th, 4:00-7:00p.m. at Schenley Plaza, and we hope you'll join us too!
