Annual Meeting 2000

The Group Against Smog and Pollution Annual Meeting presents
An Appalachian Tragedy: Air Pollution and Forest Health

This colorful, well-orchestrated documentary slide show illustrates the damage inflicted on human and forest health by chemical airborne pollutants.

“The Allegheny National Forest has been afflicted by what its supervisor has called a ‘full-forest decline,’ with sugar maple death the most dramatic manifestation. Here, in some stands, maple mortality has reached 80%, with the rate of regeneration down to zero.”
–An Appalachian Tragedy

Your host for the presentation will be air pollution expert Harvard Ayers, Ph.D., of Appalachian State University, co-editor of “An Appalachian Tragedy: Air Pollution and Tree Death in the Eastern Forests of North America”, and chair of Appalachian Voices, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to preserving America’s native Appalachian forests.

Beautifully illustrated books, videos, and tote bags will be available for your holiday purchases. For more information, or GASP memberships, call 412-441-6650. Refreshments will be served. Public parking is available. This event is free and open to the public
