GASP is pleased to have U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) join us as our featured speaker at the GASP Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 2, 2002. He will discuss the ongoing national debate on our energy future from automotive directions to power choices. We invite you to hear the political discussions that are shaping environmental initiatives and laws.

There are many people in Congress who work hard to achieve a healthy environment, but Representative Waxman stands out. He is a breath of fresh air instead of the all too frequent hot air we commonly hear. Representative Waxman has been a major national policymaker for two decades — arguably, the most important lawmaker on environmental issues.1
We have many activities lined up for the evening:
- 4:00 - 6:00 pm: Take a test drive/ride in a hybrid gas-electric vehicle. The 2003 Honda Civic, the 2002 Toyota Prius and the 2000 Honda Insight will be available.
4:00 - 8:00 pm: Purchase raffle tickets and bid on impressive auction items, ranging from a vacation apartment in beautiful Clearwater Beach, Florida to a kayak tour for five from the Three Rivers Rowing Association.
5:00 - 6:00 pm: A special reception where attendees at Friend, Patron and Sponsor Donation Levels will have the opportunity to chat directly with Rep. Waxman.
6:00 - 7:00 pm: Delicious dinner buffet featuring a variety of entrees, salads and vegetables followed by dessert. A cash bar will also be available throughout the event.
6:45 - 8:00 pm: Main program, featuring a preeminent advocate for the environment, Representative Henry Waxman. Waxman will speak on the upcoming environmental Congressional discussions and our energy future, followed by a question and answer session.
8:00 - 8:15 pm: Auction and raffle winners will be announced.
8:15 - 8:25 pm: Annual Business Meeting for GASP members.

Representative Waxman and the Environment
- Rep. Waxman was one of the primary authors of the 1990 Clean Air Act, which sets out a comprehensive program to combat smog, acid rain, toxic air emissions, and ozone depletion. He also sponsored the 1986 and 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, the 1996 Food Quality Act (which regulates pesticides), the Radon Abatement Act, and the Lead Contamination Control Act. Rep. Waxman is continuing to pursue legislation to control indoor air pollution, and global warming.
- Rep. Waxman chaired the Commerce Committeeis Subcommittee on Health and the Environment from 1979 to 1994. He was the Subcommittee’s Ranking Member in 1995 and 1996.
- Rep. Waxman has been the Ranking Minority Member on the Government Reform Committee since 1997. The Committee on Government Reform is the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction to investigate any federal program and any matter with federal policy implications. As Ranking Member, Rep. Waxman sits on all of the Government Reform Committee’s Subcommittees.
- Rep. Waxman is also a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. He sits on the Health, Energy and Air Quality; Environment and Hazardous Materials; and Commerce, Trade, Consumer Protection Subcommittees.
- Rep. Waxman has also been a leader on health issues, including universal health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid coverage, tobacco, AIDS, pesticides, nursing home quality standards, women’s health research and reproductive rights, the availability and cost of prescription drugs, and the right of communities to know about pollution levels.
- Henry Waxman was born on September 12, 1939 in Los Angeles and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from UCLA and a J.D. from the UCLA Law School. He and his wife, the former Janet Kessler, have a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren.
